Best Side Hustles for Artists (That Can Turn Into Full-Time Income)

If you're an artist looking to bring in extra income — or build something much bigger — you're in the right place. The good news is that there have never been more side hustles available to artists than there are right now. The hard part is figuring out which ones are actually worth your time.

I've spent over a decade building businesses from my art, and I've tried a lot of things. Some flopped. Others became the foundation of a multi-million dollar brand. Here's what I've learned about the best side hustles for artists — and how to pick the right one for where you are right now.

What Makes a Good Artist Side Hustle?

Not all side hustles are created equal. The best ones for artists have a few things in common: they leverage skills you already have, they have real income potential (not just pocket change), and they can grow over time into something more substantial if you want them to.

1. Selling Digital Products

This is one of the most powerful side hustles for artists because it scales. You create something once — a digital print, a clipart bundle, a pattern collection, a Procreate brush set — and you sell it over and over again with no extra work.

Etsy and Creative Market are the most popular platforms for selling digital art products. Your own website gives you more control and higher margins. The startup cost is low, and the income potential grows with every product you add to your shop. This was how I started my business, Gingiber, and it's still one of my favorite income streams to recommend to artists starting out.

2. Art Licensing

Art licensing means companies pay you to use your designs on their products — think mugs, greeting cards, fabric, stationery, home decor. You get paid a royalty or flat fee without giving up your artwork or doing the manufacturing yourself.

I go deep on this in The Artist's Side Hustle — my book written specifically to help artists build real, sustainable income from their work. It's the resource I wish I'd had from the start. Grab your copy here.

3. Physical Products — Including Niche Items That Sell

Selling physical products is a classic path that's now easier than ever. Print-on-demand services like Printful and Redbubble let you upload your artwork and sell it on t-shirts, tote bags, pillows, and more — without holding inventory.

But don't overlook niche products. One of my favorite examples? Tea towels. They're charming, functional, and customers love them. I created a whole course on how to design and sell them: Create and Sell Tea Towels. It's a great, focused way to add a physical product to your shop without overwhelming yourself.

4. Teaching What You Know

If you have a skill people want to learn, teaching is one of the highest-leverage side hustles out there. Record it once, sell it indefinitely. Not sure what to teach? Start with whatever you get asked about most — your process, your tools, your style.

5. Commissions

Taking commissions — custom artwork made to order for clients — is one of the most direct ways to earn income from your art. Portraits, custom illustrations, logo design, wedding stationery — the range is huge. Commissions trade time for money, which limits how much you can scale, but they're a great way to build income quickly while you develop other streams.

6. Build an Audience That Actually Buys

All of these side hustles work better when you have an audience. But not just followers — buyers. There's a difference. My workshop Build an Audience Who Buys Your Art is specifically designed to help you grow the right kind of audience — people who are genuinely excited about your work and ready to support it.

How to Turn Your Side Hustle Into a Full-Time Business

The artists who successfully make the leap from side hustle to full-time income all have one thing in common: they treat it like a business, not a hobby. That means setting goals, tracking income, and investing in learning the business side of being an artist.

A great place to see what that looks like is Art That Works — real strategies, real income streams, real artist businesses. And if you want community and ongoing support, the Side Hustle Society is my membership for artists building their businesses one step at a time.

When you're ready for a full coaching experience and personalized strategy, my Thrive Art Accelerator is built exactly for this moment.

Start With One

The biggest mistake I see artists make is trying to do everything at once. Pick one side hustle from this list that fits your skills and your schedule. Get it working. Then layer in the next one. Your creative skills are genuinely valuable — it's just a matter of packaging them in the right way.
