Why Your Emails Might Not Be Getting Responses
Let’s be honest… sending emails can feel intimidating. You send something out into the world and hope someone on the other end reads it, feels excited about it, and actually responds.
But here’s the truth I’ve learned after years of pitching shops, reaching out to clients, and emailing my way through building a creative business: you don’t need a perfect email, you just need a clear, kind, confident one.
Here’s how to write emails that people want to answer.
1. Keep It Short and Clear
People are busy. Long emails get skimmed or ignored.
Aim for 3–5 simple sentences:
-
Who you are
-
Why you’re reaching out
-
What you’re asking
-
What the next step is
Clarity is kindness. When people know what you want, responding becomes easy.
2. Lead With Connection
Start your email with something genuine and human.
Maybe you love their shop. Maybe you admire their art. Maybe something about their work inspired you.
A simple but genuine, connection line opens hearts and inboxes.
Example:
“I love your shop, your window displays always brighten my day.”
3. Make Your Ask Specific
Most emails don’t get responses because the ask is vague.
Instead of:
“Let me know what you think.”
Try:
-
“Could I send 3 prints for you to consider?”
-
“Do you have 5 minutes this week to share your wholesale info?”
-
“Are you open to a quick chat about collaboration?”
Specific asks get specific answers.
4. Keep Your Tone Light and Warm
Your email doesn’t need to sound formal or corporate.
Let your real voice come through, friendly, warm, human.
Something as simple as:
“Thank you for taking a moment to read this, it means so much.”
creates trust instantly.
5. Add a Gentle Soft Close
Instead of pressure, offer an open invitation.
Try:
“If this feels like a good fit, I’d love to talk more.”
or
“If now isn’t the right time, no worries at all, thanks for considering.”
A soft close keeps the door open without expectation.
The truth is, every opportunity I’ve had in my creative career started with one brave email.
And I believe your next opportunity is waiting on the other side of one, too.
